Whitnall's Harmeyer earns scholar-athlete honor

Whitnall graduate Heather Harmeyer is the recipient of the 2012 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women's Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete Award.

Harmeyer, a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, carries a 3.63 grade-point average in hotel, restaurant and tourism management. She is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and received Stout's Chancellor's Academic Award.

She has several entries in the all-time school record book at Stout on the uneven parallel bars and floor exercise, and she qualified individually for the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association national championships on the bars. That event will be held in Brockport, N.Y., on March 23-24.

Harmeyer has also been active in several campus committees and has done volunteer work for the Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and the Children's Miracle Network.

Greendale's Merg helps Warhawks to final four

Greendale High School graduate Alex Merg totaled 10 points and a game-high seven assists as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team downed Virginia Wesleyan, 76-62, in an NCAA Division III Tournament sectional title game last weekend.

Merg and the Warhawks will play in the final four this weekend. Whitewater (27-4) will take on MIT (29-1) on Friday night, while Cabrini College (30-1) will meet Illinois Wesleyan (23-7). The winners meet on Saturday for the Division III crown.
