Franklin — The Federation of Croatian Societies will celebrate its annual Croatian Fest this weekend, July 19-20.

The Federation of Croatian Societies has been celebrating this festival at the Croatian Park, located at 9100 S. 76th Street, in July for more than 50 years, said John Braovac, federation president.

"Our guests often tell us that they love the authentic atmosphere of a Croatian celebration with great food and drink, live Croatian music and being able to enjoy it with family and friends in a park environment," Braovac said.

The fest begins Saturday at the Croatian Park, from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Admission is free Saturday, and grilled food items will be available.

Sunday's festivities begin at 10 a.m. and last until 9 p.m. Admission is $3, which includes something new this year.

"We are giving a free drink ticket that is good for a tap beer, soda or water with a minimum of two nonperishable food items that will be donated to the Hunger Task Force," Braovac said.

Visitors can also earn a free drink ticket by sharing their contact information with the federation or by donating a minimum of $5 to help Croatian flood victims. The offer is limited to one free drink ticket per guest.

A Croatian Mass will be held at 11 a.m., followed by a cultural program at 2 p.m. Dinner will include roasted lamb, pork, chicken and other grilled food items.

Rakija Bend, a Croatian band based out of Chicago, will perform both Saturday and Sunday.

"I really enjoy the fact that a lot of people use the Fest as an opportunity for families and friends to gather together who normally don't get to see each other throughout the year," Braovac said.
