Oak Creek receives grant to protect trees from DNR

Oak Creek - The city received an $8,175 grant from the state Department of Transportation to protect trees from the emerald ash borer.

The city was one of 48 communities and nonprofits that received a total of $527,706 from the DNR Urban Forestry Grant program.

Grants for 2012 support tree inventories and assessments, management plans, emerald ash borer preparedness plans, and other urban forest restoration projects. Communities were encouraged to apply for grants to bolster their preparedness for emerald ash borers. Wisconsin has approximately 5.2 million ash trees, all are at heightened risk since the insect was confirmed here.

Historical society publishes free program calendar

Hales Corners - Historians throughout the greater Milwaukee area can find a preview of coming attractions in a program calendar published by the Hales Corners Historical Society.

The calendars are free and available at the Hales Corners Village Hall and library, 5885 S. 116th St., or by calling Bette Arey at (414) 425-5572.

The calendar lists topics and speakers at society programs, which are always free and open to the public. The program guide also identifies special events planned for 2012.

Greendale Chamber holds annual awards banquet

Greendale - The Greendale Chamber of Commerce was to hold its annual awards banquet Feb. 1 at the Tuckaway Country Club in Franklin.

The following awards were to be presented:

Ferch's Malt Shoppe & Grille will receive the Business Member of the Year award for its commitment to the community. Ferch's was instrumental in the development of Daffodil Playground and the Greendale Ice Rink. Ferch's is actively involved in the special events hosted in downtown Greendale throughout the year which highlight local businesses and help to promote a sense of community.

Sandy Speare will receive the Charlie Herman Educator of the Year award. The library media specialist at Greendale Middle School, Speare was instrumental in bringing the One Book/One School Program, the Battle of the Books competition and the After School Study Club to the school.

Judy Fons is the recipient of the Spirit of Greendale award. Since moving to the community in 1961, Fons has been involved in many organizations, including the Greendale Playschool, Junior Women's Club, Village Club, Parish Council, Friends of Music, Park and Recreation Department, Public Celebrations Committee, Twi-Nite Girls' Softball League and Step Up to Better Health Committee. Hales Corners Historical Society publishes annual program guide.

Franklin schools hold kindergarten registration

Franklin - Kindergarten registration for the 2012-13 school year will be from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 7 and 8 at the Education & Community Center, 8255 W. Forest Hill Ave.

Children must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2012, in order.
