Greendale Schools to re-evaluate polling place requests this Thursday

Aug. 20, 2014

Greendale — A special school board meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug. 21, to consider rescinding previous requests sent to the village to move polling places out of district schools.

Due to a growing concern for student safety, the Greendale School District sent a formal letter to the board of trustees in May to ask that polling places be moved out of schools by the general election.

Under pressure from the district to move the polling places, the board of trustees passed a referendum question on July 15 that would ask voters to weigh in on the controversy.

The school district sent another letter to the board earlier this week, which granted permission for the village to use schools as polling places for the upcoming election.

"We understand the various challenges faced by the Village as work continues to find suitable alternative sites to serve as polling locations," the letter states. "… Therefore, we agree to adjust our expectations on timing, and are no longer suggesting that you move polling places in Greendale out of the elementary schools beginning with the next scheduled election on Tuesday, November 4, 2014."

The district's response, however, was not what the board of trustees had anticipated. During Tuesday's board meeting, trustees wished for clarification of the school board's letters before making a final decision regarding the referendum question.

Due to state statute, referendum questions must be submitted by next Tuesday in order to be placed on the ballot for the general election.

The school board will discuss rescinding its two letters, which set different conditions for the polling place issue, at the special board meeting.

Should both letters be rescinded, a referendum question may not be necessary, city officials have previously stated.

The special school board meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Greendale High School Library, 6801 Southway.
