Cell, unlisted numbers not included in village's rapid alert system

But residents can have themselves added in

May 23, 2012

Greendale - Should disaster strike, the village now has the ability to quickly call its residents and businesses to deliver information essential to staying safe and sound.

The newly installed Reverse 911 Community Telephone Notification System can call 1,000 phones and play a message - specially recorded by local police with essential information about the situation - in one minute flat.

However, the system's current database of phone numbers could leave some residents in the dark during an emergency: cell phone numbers, unlisted numbers or numbers for Voice-over-Internet users aren't included.

Numbers can be added

Greendale residents and business owners whose numbers aren't in the existing database can have their information manually added. All they need to do is fill out a registration form online or at the Police Department.

Phone numbers will be linked to a specific address. Since emergency personnel expect to use the Reverse 911 system to contact people in specific neighborhoods about localized emergencies, the address a number is linked to will determine which notifications a person receives.

Police officials recommend that people who have recently moved into Greendale register with the system and said visitors can register for a given time period.

The system can deliver text messages to TTY/TDD devices as well.

How it works

In the event of an emergency, police personnel will identify the affected area and record a message that describes the situation and recommends the protective actions. The Reverse 911 system can automatically call all telephone numbers within that geographic area recorded in its database and deliver the recorded message.

It may be used to communicate information about emergency evacuations, missing person alerts, natural disaster alerts, hazardous material leaks, neighborhood emergency incidents and more.
