Franklin serial burglar gets slap on wrist.......for now

Remember Shawn Winters?

He was the Franklin man arrested in November, accused in a series of burglaries in the northeast section of Franklin.

Franklin Police Chief Richard Oliva has informed Franklin Mayor Tom Taylor and Franklin aldermen that Winters was sentenced this week to one year in the House of Correction and an additional four years that was stayed.  Winters WAS out on bail and was scheduled to report to the House of Corrections next week.

The same day this week that Winters was slapped on the wrist at his sentencing, Oliva says DNA analysis results from a burglary on S. Carmel  on October 17, 2009 confirmed Winter's presence in the vehicle he stole from the victim's garage.  A new warrant was obtained and earlier today, Franklin police took Winters into custody for the Carmel St. burglary.

Winters has denied any involvement in any of the string of Franklin burglaries. It’s interesting that since Winters was picked up, the burglaries have stopped.

Oliva told the mayor and aldermen, “Hopefully this new arrest will put him (Winters) away for a longer period of time.”
