Kyla's Korner

By Jennifer Fischer

If Kevin had his way there wouldn’t be a blue bin set out every other Tuesday with all of our glass, plastic and aluminum.  Recycling isn’t his #1 priority.

I try to make an effort of looking at the bottom of every plastic piece that comes in to our house to confirm it can go in to the bin.  I even cut apart the rings that hold cans together so that my six pack does not result in the death of a bottle nosed dolphin.  (Yes, I know we don’t have many dolphins in Lake Michigan.  Call it Catholic guilt.  It only took one story to stay in my mind forever.  I’ve swam with dolphins on three occasions.  Trust me the last thing I want to do is contribute to the suffering of such a beautiful creature.)

Sorting our trash is about where I draw the line though.  I don’t purchase “green” light bulbs because quite frankly, I don’t want mercury poisoning if I dispose of them improperly.  I drive a large car and I USE THE AIR CONDITIONING IN THE SUMMER.  Frequently, I forget my reusable bags in the trunk of my car and have to choose between carbon-producing plastic or tree-killing paper.

But recently, Kevin & I committed the worst, most horrifying act of destroying the planet… the atrocity to end all atrocities… the ultimate act of killing Mother Earth.  We had Kyla.

Yes, you read correctly.  Kevin and I chose to bring a beautiful new life into this world.  We selfishly thought that carrying on our family legacy and adding something new and precious to our world was a GOOD thing.  We thought that by having a child we would be able to see our family tree bloom.  Instead we are destroying the rainforests.

Two “academic” yahoos at Oregon State University released a study that essentially said we really shouldn’t have as many children so that we don’t destroy the planet.  (I can’t help but wonder who will be around to enjoy our pristine planet that is “saved” if the human race dies off by taking their advice.)  Seriously.  These scholars support the theory that we are ruining earth by having children and ultimately producing more carbon emissions.

The Wall Street Journal offers an opinion about these ridiculous claims. If a newspaper associated with business, finance and technology can “get it” I don’t see why the two Einsteins at Oregon can’t.
