Moms of school-agers: Listen up!

There are many times I look around at women younger than me and around my age and think “What is WRONG with you?  Why is it that grannies battling arthritic joints and poor eyesight can do it but YOU can’t?”

I’m referring to “dressing up” when you go out.  I don’t mean an elaborate up-do and ball gown for a run to Pick ‘n Save.  We’ve all had moments when makeup means very little as you discover you are out of a major ingredient for a recipe, or that it’s your turn for snack day tomorrow (and it’s 9:00 pm.)

What I truly don’t understand is how and why we have become a nation of slobs.  We don’t need to be full-on Laura Petrie at all times and wear pearls when we go to get our oil changed.  But yikes, we’ve come full circle!

And guys, lest you think you’re all the embodiment of GQ, I’ve got news for you as well…  Take off your tattered hats when you enter a building (and HELLO the bill faces FORWARD!)  Also, for the love of all things decent, never under ANY circumstances wear anything sleeveless.  Eeeew.

But back to the fairer sex for another moment.  Let’s discuss moms of school-age kids.  Do you think about how YOU look as you take your little cherubs to and from their school?  I’ll admit it’s really the last thing on my mind.  I need to make sure Kyla’s uniform is up to the strict St. Anthony’s standards.  I double-check that her backpack is filled, and if she’s taking cold lunch that day I make sure her lunch bag is stocked with all her favorites.  I feel that’s more important than if my lip liner is perfect.

HOWEVER…  I do take a moment to make sure my hair is tidy (generally a pony tail but still) and that I have on just enough make up so that I don’t frighten anyone.  And if I owned them, I certainly wouldn’t wear Hello Kitty PJ’s.
