The Barking Lot-America's Finest Dog Blog (04/05/14)

The Barking Lot

The Barking Lot is a regular weekly feature of This Just In
Written by my lovely wife, Jennifer and me.  It opens with the weekend dog walking forecast followed by the main blog from dog lover, Jennifer. Then its DOGS IN THE NEWS and our close. Enjoy!

THE WEEKEND DOG-WALKING FORECAST: We grade the weather outlook for taking your pet outdoors.

TODAY:  Sunny. High of 50.  "C"

SUNDAY:  Partly cloudy. High of 59.  I'll believe it when I see it. But if it happens..."B"

Here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog:

I’d like to get a good deal on some bedding, and maybe some kitchen gadgets.  While I’m browsing, I might find an outfit for Kyla or a new Spring handbag for myself.  Sure I could run to the mall but sitting in the comfort of my own home and looking through thousands of options on one discount website (free shipping, to boot!) is really very appealing.

I can narrow my options in so many ways:  by category, by color, by size, by price, by brand, etc.  I can put things in my electronic shopping cart ‘til my heart’s content and then just as quickly delete them.  “Impulse shopping” is WAY safer online than in the stores, too!

So while I’m perusing purses and glancing at gadgets, I might as well shop for a dog too.

No, seriously.

Why shouldn’t I check out the adoptable pups in my zip code and narrow by size, coat color, breed, etc. as long as I’m on  That’s right, you read correctly.  One of the largest online discount sites for everything from PJ’s to printers can now offer you dogs.  (And cats, and reptiles among others.)

Well, isn’t actually selling the pets.  That would A) be ridiculous and B) be extremely illegal.  Actually I think what they are doing is fantastic and one more way to match up adoptable dogs with their forever homes.

Chairman and CEO Patrick M. Byrne calls it “one of the best ideas of my life.”  By going to the Pet Adoptions tab at the top of the main page, potential pet parents are then prompted to enter their zip code, how far they will travel for an available pet, and to narrow by type, breed, size and other desirables.

Mr. Byrne describes the process, and the reason he added this feature, here.

I think this could be a great additional opportunity for people to adopt a new pet.  Of course they can go on the websites of their local animal shelter or breed rescue organization.  But I feel that the more ways people can adopt rescue animals, the better.  Long-time readers of The Barking Lot know that I advocate adopting shelter animals in 99% of occasions.  More information about this new program is available here.

If you can’t wait a moment longer to find your new BFF (that would be, Best Furry Friend) then head straight to’s Pet Adoption Page.   Tell ‘em The Barking Lot sent you!
