The Barking Lot is a regular weekly feature of this just in…Written by my lovely wife, Jennifer and me. It opens with the weekend dog walking forecast followed by the main blog from dog lover, Jennifer. Then it’s DOGS IN THE NEWS and our close. Enjoy!
THE WEEKEND DOG-WALKING FORECAST: We grade the weather outlook for taking your pet outdoors.

Here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog:
If you were a contestant on Family Feud and the question was “Name a famous cartoon dog” I’m sure Snoopy would pop into the #1 spot. But if you’re the parent of a preschooler who loves watching PBS, your immediate answer would more likely be that Big Red Dog. You know, Clifford?
It seems difficult to believe that Clifford is 50 years old. (Then again I’m having a tough time processing the fact that in a few months, I too will be celebrating a decade marker. And no, we’re not talking the same decade.) As a child, I truly loved Clifford and his best friend Emily Elizabeth. I watched the program faithfully and read the books.
It’s funny how as a kid, you just enjoy things that make you laugh. You don’t think about messages that are being sent (learning to share, making new friends, adjusting to a new environment.) Now as a parent I look at kid’s shows in a whole new light. While there are times I don’t like what I see, for the most part I find it comforting that the themes presented to me are the same ones in the episodes Kyla watches. It’s also fun for me to relive my favorites through my daughter’s eyes.
Those sentiments are echoed by the author of this short article. Of course Scholastic, has a tail-waggin’ celebration going on for several months including a live webcast event this Monday, September 24. Kids can also enter a sweepstakes to have a Clifford birthday party for their classroom. All those great details can be found on their website.
We usually don’t have an OPENING video in The Barking Lot, but I just couldn’t resist. Watch Norman Bridwell himself share the thoughts behind the most beloved Big Red Dog.
Happy Birthday, Clifford!
Here’s to 50 more years!
