THE WEEKEND DOG-WALKING FORECAST: We grade the weather outlook for taking your pet outdoors.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. High of 69. "C"
Here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog:
Clearly taking after her mommy, Kyla loves dogs. She loves animated dogs on TV, she loves her stuffed dogs, and she loves every single dog taking its morning or evening constitutional in our subdivision. Last summer she wanted to pet the pups as they walked past our house, but she just wasn’t brave enough once she got within arm’s length of them. I didn’t push the issue; I knew eventually her desire would overcome her fear.
Sure enough, this year is a different story. She will pet any dog that I take her to and giggles with delight at wagging tails. Fortunately she asks me if she can pet the dog that’s walking past, and we approach the owner together. I hold her hand so that she doesn’t bolt off and startle the dog, and then I ask if it’s OK if she meets Fido. She’s never been denied a request… the pooches in our neighborhood are pretty mellow and child-friendly.
Still, I take no chances. Every time she wants to meet a new furry friend I remind her that we ASK to pet a dog. I have her pet the tail area and make sure she keeps her little hands away from the dog’s face. The entire time, I’m just a bit wary since I don’t know the dog personally. I don’t care WHAT the breed is; I’m cautious and constantly looking for any sign or movement that signals the dog’s discomfort, irritation, etc.
Seems pretty common sense, right? Just in case, here are some helpful reminders for your family since children most likely to get a bite are between 5 and 9 years old.
