Here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog:

I am amazed how researchers continue to study canine behaviors.  It seems we just can’t get enough of results that tell us, “Dogs get us.”  We love trying to figure out what’s going on between those floppy or perky and often-scratched-behind ears of our four-legged friends.  We can’t help ourselves.  We consider them members of our family so why wouldn’t we want to know what they want and how they feel about us?  We can’t ask them directly so we turn to science, studies, and experiments.

140 years ago, Charles Darwin published “The Expression of Emotion in Men and Animals.”  (That’s way back in 1872 for you non-math majors.)  Since then we’ve continued to observe behaviors and “emotions” of animals and relate the findings to our own lives and interactions with our pets.

Even if NO research and evidence were available, most pet owners will surely tell you, “Of course my dog thinks I’m the greatest!”  No other creature loves us as purely and unconditionally as a dog does; not our spouses, friends, or children.

From  “The latest research, published in the journal Animal Cognition, found that pet dogs may truly be man (or woman's) best friend if a person is in distress. That distressed individual does not even have to be someone the dog knows.”

From contagious yawning to comforting a human, dogs display amazing emotional connections to us.  Read the entire article here.  And don’t forget to click on the video “Dogs, Humans Think, Act alike.”

When you’re done reading The Barking Lot, go give Fido an extra belly rub.  He’ll love you even more.
