Tonight's MPS Budget Protest Rally

Re: Rallies Opposed to MPS Budget Cuts

Dt: March 30, 2011

Participants in tonight’s rally regarding potential cuts to the Milwaukee Public Schools’ budget should note that budgeting is about making tough choices. Even if we set aside questions about salary and benefits, to date, the MPS Board has failed to rein in questionable spending, which the MacIver Institute has highlighted for nearly two years.

Nearly every month, MacIver publishes a feature, titled “MPS Checkbook,” which highlights some of the more questionable expenditures approved by the MPS School Board

Some examples include:

  • $24,999 to private investigators to obtain evidence and provide surveillance of their teachers to determine residency.
  • $1,360 for coat rack rentals
  • $24,999 for MPS enrollment advertising
  • $16,000 for the Flood the Hood with Dreams mentoring program
  • $1,000 for gardening classes
  • $10,000 for teacher training in American history
  • $2,800 for PowerPoint presentations
  • $2,207.40 for leather conference room chairs
  • $4,183 for decorative plaques for retiring staff
  • $9,500 to UWM for the evaluation of MPS’ after school wellness programs
  • $4,900 for a workshop so staff could ‘lighten up’
  • $7,000 for ‘restorative justice’ training
  • $10,000 for environmental education services
  • $8,000 for autographed copies of the book “Skywaker”
  • $4,000 for multicultural teacher training
  • $1,385 for teacher training in pre-school exercise
  • 4,000 for youth and adult martial arts, Yoga and Pilates instruction
  • $2,000 for Karate instruction
  • $3,500 for a 3-day ‘experimental education canoe trip’
